The Quinlan Visual Arts Center has opened its Fall Exhibition, which features four displays of recent work by Debbie Mueller, Frank Norton, Armando Chacon, and members of the Georgia Art League.
Mueller paints landscapes and still lifes, all observed from life and firmly focused on the interplay of light and shadow (which explains this season’s exhibition title). She uses traditional methods animated by lively brushwork, bold cropping, and a strong sense of graphic design. As illustrated here, many of Mueller’s recent works depict art books, an homage to the historical artists from whom she draws inspiration. Her use of overhead perspective lends intimacy, transforming familiar objects into evocative images that can stir a sense of nostalgia.
Quinlan executive director Nairika K. Cornett notes that Mueller’s paintings “are not simply descriptive, but attentive, quietly animated by shifts in illumination, atmosphere, and form. They reflect both technical discipline and a palpable joy in seeing.”
Mueller says she found her own artistic voice by painting still lifes, and she recently concluded a long career as an obstetrician/gynecologist in order to pursue art full-time. She will lead a still life painting workshop at the Quinlan August 22–23, and we look forward to seeing where she heads next artistically.
