The renowned watercolorist Joseph Zbukvic (b. 1952) has his first-ever solo show in Charleston, specifically at Principle Gallery. Zbukvic was born in Zagreb; his parents discouraged him from pursuing a career in art, but when he was 18, political instability forced the family to immigrate to Australia. There, the young man was able to establish a successful painting career in Melbourne, where he lives today.

Zbukvic has become a leading master of watercolors, covering a wide array of subjects and winning more than 200 awards for the fluid brushwork and subtle tonal shifts that create a sense of place that is both dreamlike and deeply familiar.

He explains, “I try to achieve a balance of harmony between tonal values, design, color, and mood that will visually evoke the emotions between the viewer and the painting. Watercolor, with its subtle and gentle effects, is a perfect medium to achieve this.”

The Principle show will feature scenes Zbukvic has painted in Venice, Paris, Melbourne, New York City, and beyond.
