Her Fascination With the West

Kathleen B. Hudson is widely admired for paintings of coasts and alpine landscapes, but soon McLarry Fine Art will exhibit her new scenes inspired by vistas of the American Southwest. Titled “Western Visions,” this show will reveal Hudson’s fascination with the region’s dramatic deserts, rugged canyons, expansive skies, sculptural rock formations, and ever-changing light.

Based in Colorado Springs, Hudson paints on location whenever possible in order to capture nature’s fleeting beauty, atmospheric effects, and emotional power. One of the youngest artists ever elected a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists, Hudson’s career reached a significant milestone when her “Bright Morning, Timberline Falls” was awarded the Grand Prize in the sixth annual PleinAir Salon (now known as The Salon Art Prize). That painting subsequently appeared on the cover of the July 2017 issue of PleinAir, Fine Art Connoisseur’s sister magazine.

Less than a month later (October 16), McLarry will open “Leon Loughridge: A Tradition of Devotion.” This Denver artist has long been intrigued by New Mexico’s San Francisco de Asís Mission and the annual renewal of its adobe walls — an act of devotion undertaken since the church’s construction in 1820.

Loughridge has created a portfolio of lithographs and woodblock prints depicting the rite, all based on watercolors developed over many years. He will demonstrate his printmaking process at McLarry on October 17 and 18.
