The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum has launched its 54th annual Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition & Sale, always a standout in the field of art of the American West. This is the museum’s largest annual fundraiser, with last year’s revenues totaling $3.5 million.

Nearly 300 paintings and sculptures have been created by 92 invited talents. Three new participants (Kevin Red Star, Jessica L. Bryant, and Dustin Payne) are joining 89 returning artists, including Walt Gonske, who will celebrate his 50th year of participation. Marking 40 years or more are eight others: Kent Ullberg, William Acheff, Gerald Balciar, Jim Wilcox, Tony Angell, George Carlson, John Encinias, and Joseph Bohler. Their submissions will depict landscapes, wildlife, figures, portraits, and significant moments in Western history and lore.

The excitement got underway in mid-June, when collector-patrons enjoyed a fixed-price art sale, as well as seminars, demonstrations, receptions, and an awards dinner. Among the presenters that weekend were Thomas Blackshear II, Sean Michael Chavez, David A. Leffel, Sherrie McGraw, Curt Walters, Kim Wiggins, and James Morgan (who won the Prix de West Purchase Award last year).
