Scheduled on the final weekend of the popular Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival, the 20th annual Jackson Hole Art Auction (JHAA) will occur at the Center for the Arts downtown. As usual, it features an array of Western, Native American, wildlife, and sporting art in a wide range of media.
One highlight is the watercolor by Charles M. Russell (shown above), which encapsulates this master at the height of his powers, capturing the drama, dust, and danger of a high-speed steer roping on the open range. This scene dates from a pivotal phase when Russell was transitioning from working cowboy to nationally recognized artist, and his watercolors from this period are hotly coveted by collectors and institutions.
