Hermosa Beach, California: The Gallery of Hermosa is preparing to open a rare exhibition devoted to the Chinese-born, California-based master painter Jove Wang. It will feature more than 20 oil paintings never shown before.

Trained at the China Academy of Art and shaped by his experiences in Asia and the U.S., Wang has developed a distinctive voice that bridges Eastern and Western traditions. His work has earned top honors in the field and is recognized for its technical mastery, emotional depth, and ability to capture his subjects’ inner life.

The exhibition takes its title from Wang’s book and guiding philosophy, Instinct and Feeling. He says his artistry “is not about copying what I see, but about expressing what I feel. The subject is only the beginning; what matters is the life, emotion, and spirit that emerges through instinct. In these new works, I have returned to memories of Jilin [his home province in northeastern China], as well as the landscapes, scenes, and figures that continue to move me. Each painting is a moment of connection between the visible world and something deeper.”

For more than two decades, Wang has led students to his studio in Jilin, where he is still inspired by the rich heritage of China’s rural communities. The range of subjects in this summer’s show is broad, including modern life in both Jilin and California.

“Jove’s work carries a rare balance of mastery and soul,” says Gallery of Hermosa principal Kimie Joe. “There is an immediacy where you feel his paintings before you analyze them. This new collection is especially powerful because it reveals both his personal history and his range, from intimate figurative works to expansive landscapes and seascapes. It’s an honor to share this level of work with our community.”
